Going To Have Your Maternity Bras Fitted Might Remind You Of Your First Bra Fitting!
Do not for a moment think going along for your first maternity bra fitting will be as simple as choosing your regular size off the rack. Along with the many other changes you will be experiencing as a pregnant or nursing woman, is the fact that your bust will be changing in a number of significant ways too.
Maternity bras, thankfully, are specifically designed to meet the many requirements necessary when pregnant or breastfeeding. You will experience an increase in bust size, usually around the end of the first trimester which will have you heading for the maternity store to purchase new bras. This is not as easy as guessing you'll be a size up – a mistake made by many first time mothers-to-be. I was horrified to find myself back in the dressing room, tape around me, with that anxious embarrassment experienced when I was taken for my first ever bra fitting!
So, what should you be looking for when you purchase your maternity bras? There are three things which are as important as each other. Fit, comfort and style. The fit of your pregnancy and nursing lingerie is imperative. It must allow for growth fluctuations which will occur mainly at the end of the first and during the third trimesters, and again when your milk comes in, usually when you are in the maternity hospital. Bras need to be professionally fitted to allow for expansion. This is achieved by having six rows of eyes at the back adjusters, supportive adjustable straps and strong power elastene in the back panels for extra support.
The most comfortable maternity bras use carefully chosen fabrics and laces which are supportive and smooth, the seam construction causes no chafing and the soft cotton linings are double and durable to endure the extra washing which will be required. It is possible to have stylish maternity bras and lingerie – accept nothing less. Fashion forward, colourful, feminine and yes, even sexy is de rigueur these days. Just as with your regular lingerie, your maternity bras and nightwear should incorporate exquisite attention to detail and matching underwear. You are pregnant after all and pregnancy and breastfeeding rank as one of the most feminine times in your life – revel in it!
To avoid spiralling back to that first bra fitting experience, you should be aware that the body to be fitted has almost literally taken on a life of its own. You have a new shape – enjoy it. Maternity bras have morphed into lingerie coveted by women who are not even pregnant or nursing, due to the research and development that has gone into them. The choices are abundant and my final piece of advice is that you allow yourself plenty of time to enjoy the experience of being fitted into your new maternity bras.
