Need help finding a network attached storage?
My requirements are:
- 2 or ore SATA 3.5" ports
- Ethernet port
- supports FAT & NTFS filesystems
- no restriction on hard drive size
My wish list is that it supports:
- USB
- Not too pricey
I recently set up my NAS for less than $50. I bought this Network Storage server on Buy.com (on sale for $18): http://snurl.com/ajhgp
I bought this HD Dock on RadioShack (on sale for $20): http://snurl.com/ajhm1. I have several 500 GB 3.5" internal drives and a couple of 2.5" drives to use with this.
In addition I have several external hard drives in enclosures.
I attached the HD Dock and a 1 TB external drive to the storage server, which is connected to my router. Voila! No hassle NAS for under $40.
Note: The price now (no sales ongoing) is around $80.
If you are a little geeky, check out the open source NAS at http://www.freenas.org/. You can buy a cheap desktop for under $50 on Craigslist or something similar. But be warned that you may need to upgrade some interfaces for this to work.
