5 Good Reasons Why You Should Use Organic Cereals
"Most men die of their remedies, not of their illnesses" – Moliere
What is a Cereal?
Grains, cereals or cereal grains are grasses (members of the monocot families Poaceae or Gramineae); they are cultivated for the nourishing components of the fruit seeds. The best known and most used are oats, wheat, barley, rye, maize and rice. These are staple crops meaning they are basics in most peoples diets. Cereal grains are grown in greater quantities and provide more food energy worldwide than any type of crop. Large expanses of land are dedicated to growing these foods. We should always aim to get organic cereals as they constitute a huge part of our daily diets.
The top 5 reasons why you should use organic cereals are:
1. Organic cereals are natural, organically grown and free of additives, artificial preservatives and colors.
2. Organic cereals are free from pesticides. Using Organic cereals makes the biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. Pesticides can be harmful to human health and wildlife because they contaminate our water, food and air. They also accumulate in our cells. Exposure poses special concerns for children because of their high metabolisms and low body weights.
3. Organic cereals are free from synthetic grown or breeding hormones and therefore reduce human contact with endocrine-disrupting chemicals.
4. Organic cereals contain more of the essential nutrients as iron, folic acid, vitamins A B C and D. Researches also show that organically-produced foods are higher in antioxidants and other nutrients than their conventional counterparts (unrefined products).
5. Farmers that grow organic cereals are not exposed to pesticides. Through the use of organic cereals the quality of life for farmers and society as a whole enhances.
How do we use organic cereals?
- Organic cereals are used in baked products, made from flour or meal, including breads, pancakes, pastries, cookies and cakes.
- Milled grain products are manufactured by removing the bran and usually also the germ (embryo or the seed). Examples are polished rice, wheat flour, cornmeal, hominy, corn grits, pearled barley, semolina, macaroni products, prepared breakfast cereals, soups and some thickenings.
- Whole-grain products include rolled oats, brown rice, popcorn, shredded and puffed gains, and breakfast foods.
- Also beer and whiskey are made from cereals, they are fermented (distilled or undistilled) from boiled roasted grains.
Before you buy organic cereals think of this:
Is it organic? If you are looking for organic cereals or other organic products be sure to check the label! Many companies manufacture both organic and non-organic products. And, of course, "all natural" is not the same as organic.
Cereals provide more food for human consumption than any other crops. Large expanses of land are dedicated to growing these foods. By using organic cereals you can save rainforests and prevent the land to be polluted by pesticides. Pesticides can damage crops; kill vegetation, poison birds, animals and fish.
The conclusion is that living a natural and healthy life by using organic products is as much about taking care of Mother Nature as taking responsibility for our own health.
