Infant Noisy Breathing, and Its Causes, Prevention, Effects, Treatment
The normal breathing rate in babies can be up to two to four times higher than in adults. Meanwhile, noisy breathing in infants is clearly a mark of CO2 deficiency. This chemical is crucial for hundreds of body biochemical processes and reactions, including: normal immune function, control of respiration, stability of the nerves, release of oxygen in tissues (Bohr effect), dilation of blood vessels, relaxation of muscles, dilation of airways, repair of lungs and many other essential effects. (Note that there are large numbers of silly and uninformed individuals who think that CO2 is a toxic gas and large basal breathing (hyperventilation) enhances body oxygen content. Hundreds of medical articles have demonstrated that over-breathing DECREASES oxygenation of tissues. The less an individual breathes, the more oxygen their tissues get. This is true for children as well.
Tens of physiological studies have also confirmed various negative effects of low body CO2 reserves on health of babies. It is a shame of the contemporary medical community that this question is inadequately understood and elucidated in relation to importance of normal breathing rates and carbon dioxide effects.
Central causes of noisy breathing and poor health in babies comprise: lack of tight swaddling, over-feeding, over-heating (too much clothing), mouth breathing.
Consider how to employ these results in practice. How could care-takers correct environment to suit requirements of the growing infant?
Use of a soother or dummy or pacifier
At any moment of time, mouth breathing in a child should be quickly dealt with a pacifier or dummy.
Thermoregulation
A parent should keep in mind that typical child's metabolism is roughly two-three times higher than that in grown ups. Therefore, the children are well suited to survival in cooler conditions and require less clothing. This is possible due to sizable proportion of brown fat cells infants have. Babies can discharge up to approximately 80 % of their heat production through their head, in the case if it is not covered. Hence, in warm conditions, it is crucial to keep the head of a baby uncovered. (Keep the baby cool!)
How to confirm that heat exchange of a child is normal
Hold their both arms and feet for several seconds. They should be warm. If it is not so, the infant is facing a risk of being overcooled. This scenario is very rare since great majority of current adults overheat their offsprings.
Swaddling
After decades of disturbed criticism (1980-1990s), this millennial lifestyle habit is again approved by medical authorities. This was possible due to several positive reviews appeared during the last decade. Swaddling, in order to be beneficial, should be very tight, but without overheating of the baby.
In hot countries, they use sticks and ropes to ensure swaddling and good heat exchange at the same time. In Russia, it was normal to cover the cradle of an infant with a blanket leaving a hole (only 2-3 cm in size) for gas exhange. That provides swaddled children with even greater CO2 content for the body. There were practices of keeping swaddled children in drawers since they sleep there better and longer, with less crying and awakening.
Additional technique
Russian Dr. Igor Charkovsky created a technique that comprises repetitive diving of a baby in a bathtub or swimming pool, showering and teaching infants to swim. It is necessary to gradually increase the total time spent by a child diving so that to slow their normal breathing rates.
Lastly, a parent must understand that infants, newborn, children, toddlers, all pick up bad habits of parents, including mouth breathing, negative emotions, rapid breathing or hyperventilation, anxiety states and many other risk factors.
